The “Train the Trainers” information day will introduce the ILM VRQ Level 5 Award and detail how training providers can deliver the qualification in their region or nation including the competency requirements of tutors delivering the USE programme and what’s involved in becoming a ILM centre. The first course accredited by ILM under the award and endorsed by SFEDI “Understanding Social Enterprise” will be outlined and a full set of learning materials for the course discussed and displayed. An outline of the course is attached as a download [32 KB]
. The USE course was developed by Baker Brown Associates for Social Enterprise London and Jim Brown will be leading the workshop with June Hawkins ILM Head of Development. The purpose of the day is to provide information, planning and self-assessment for providers to look at how they can deliver the course and discuss future delivery, support and maintenance of the programme. The information day will be limited to 10 places and SEP is looking for a good geographic spread of providers serious about taking forward this exciting new professional development-training course. The course is a VRQ Level 5 and underpins key areas of social enterprise knowledge and understanding mapped to the new unit h of the social enterprise National Occupational Standards. SEP will subsidize the bulk of the costs for the day and make a small charge of £60.00 for those attending the day.
September 2005 …. SEP Training Project Update. The swifts have returned to Africa, the season has become autumnal, and it’s time to focus again on SOCIAL ENTEPRISE TRAINING. The summer has been busy with work continuing on completing the training products and tools, planning dissemination events with partners in the regions and nations and tying up work connected with EQUAL under Action 2. The following is therefore an update on work completed and in progress, notice of an invitation to tender for production of a CD with SEP learning resources for social enterprise, and information about future dissemination events and training for training providers.
SEP/SFEDI. The joint SEP/SFEDI (Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative) Pilot Endorsement & Evaluator Programme was very successful. Nine training providers obtained SFEDI endorsement of their learning materials mapped to the new social enterprise National Occupations Standards and seven social enterprise practitioners successfully passed their evaluator training and join SFEDI as specialist’s evaluators. SFEDI have now incorporated the new social enterprise business development standards into the published version of the SFEDI business development standards and a guide on how to use the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for social enterprise practitioners has been written. As part of disseminating the new social enterprise standards and inform the sector how to use National Occupational Standards in social enterprises two workshops were piloted in the summer. The first workshop was used as a pilot for the second one, which was a “train the trainers the NOS for training providers. The guide to NOS and how to use them in your social enterprise will be available as part of the roll out of training products over the next three months. It is anticipated that training providers who attended the NOS training will start to provide training in how to use NOS in their regions and nations.
SEP/Social Enterprise London (SEL)/ Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM). SEL have successfully jointly developed the first social enterprise qualification with the ILM. It is an Award in Knowledge of Social Enterprise based on unit h - knowledge and understanding of social enterprise of the new standards and gives 6 credits at the new Level 5 towards further qualifications. The Award in Social Enterprise is now accredited as a Vocationally Recognised Qualification (VRQ).
Understanding Social Enterprise Based on the ILM Award a new course has been developed by Baker Brown Associates under contract to SEP now called Understanding Social Enterprise (USE). The USE course, which is mapped to the new social enterprise standard unit h in knowledge and understanding, was successfully piloted and evaluated over the spring and summer. SEP plans to roll out the course nationally and is currently developing a “ train the trainers’” workshop for training providers with Baker Brown and the ILM. The workshop will be in Birmingham in early November and applications to attend the workshop will be by invitation to tender via the SEP website. If you want to register your interest in the workshop please email your details to sheila.kelly@sepgb.co.uk. To get more information about the ILM Award and the USE course please read the next paragraph and participate in the survey monkey.

Professional Development & NOS. Two more learning resources, for Professional Development Planning (PDP), have been developed by Baker Brown Associates in partnership with SEP, Social Firms South East (SFSE) and Social Enterprise East Midlands (SEEM) with additional funding from South East England Development Agency. The aim of the two PDPs’ is to enable social enterprise managers and advisors to plan their own professional development in relation to National Occupational Standards. The pilot workshops and resulting Consultation Day on 30th June with the sector on how to develop a national framework to support continuing professional development (CDP) have provoked much discussion on CPD within the sector. Evaluation and feedback from the sector suggest that business organisations working with business advisors want a clear lead from SEP on how to incorporate PD for the social enterprise sector into their organisations. SEP and SEC is therefore working with SFEDI, the ILM and the IBA to work out how social enterprise practitioners CDP learning needs can become part of their offer to the sector. SEP and SEEM will continue to work on the PDP for advisers and aim to develop a “train the trainers” workshop for providers of professional development planning services to social enterprise managers, including business advisors, trainers, mentors and senior managers.
Invitation to tender SEP will also be inviting tenders within the next two weeks to produce a CD that brings together a wealth of learning materials developed in the training project including the new NOS incorporating the social enterprise units for managers and advisers along with all the other SFEDI NOS and the new guide to NOS, the new learning materials to support unit h in knowledge and understanding and much more. This will be an interactive CD and users will be guided through the material and find it useful whether new to the sector or an existing practitioner. If you are interested in this work and have a background in developing learning resources on CDs, writing training materials and training please send your details to sheila.kelly@sepgb.co.uk to go on the tender list.
Training Products Dissemination Events SEP is currently planning with its partners and networks to showcase the training products developed and produced by the project in the past two years. Events are being planned around the nations so visit the SEP website regularly for when we will be visiting your patch in the next three months. As you can tell from the above there is a lot happening around social enterprise training at SEP. So remember keep checking the website for updates and invitations to join in the fun!
